geography

The Tambelan Islands are 111 kilometers west of Kalimantan Island (Borneo) and east of Bintan Island . They form a district ( Indonesian Kecamatan ) in the administrative district ( Indonesian Kabupaten ) Bintan ( Riau Islands province ). Together with the Anambas , Natuna and Badas Islands, the Tudjuh Archipelago . The Subi, Sejang and Seresan Islands also belong to this archipelago .

The district is divided into the villages ( Indonesian Desa ):

The center of the archipelago is the main island of Tambelan Besar (Tambelan). Upstream islets are Pilang Besar , Pilang Kecil , Kera and Betunde . In the extreme northwest, 15 kilometers from Tambelan Besar, is the island of Uwi . Between Uwi and Tembelan Besar there are Sendulang Besar , Sendulang Kecil , Sedua Besar , Sedua Kecil and Bungin from west to east . Southwest of the main island is Benua , the second largest island in the archipelago. In between are the islands of Selintang , Jela , Bedua , Lipi , Untuk and Batong . South of Benua is the island of Kapala Tambelan . The islands of Mengirang Besar (Mengiran) and Mengirang Kecil form the south of the archipelago . North-west of Benua from south to north are the islands of Leso , Nanka , Ibul , Nibung , Panjang , Tamban , Lintang , Mundaga and Genteng . Noticeable is a 24  m high white rock in the sea, the Tokong Mengirang , nine kilometers east of Mengirang Besar. The total area of the archipelago is 356,905 hectares .

The main town on Tambelan Besar is Batu Lepuk .

The highest point of the archipelago is the Bini on Tambelan Besar at 396  m .

fauna

The Sunda hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris convexus) belongs to the fauna . Even sea turtles can be found here primarily to Uwi. Since turtle eggs are traditionally eaten here and overfishing is a problem, sea turtle populations are threatened. The coral reefs have also been getting smaller and smaller since the 1990s. The government of the administrative district is therefore planning to create a national park which, together with the sea area, will have a size of 15 million hectares.

population

According to the 2010 census, a total of 4975 inhabitants live on the Tambelan Islands.

Economy and transportation

Less than a kilometer from Batu Lepuk is a 160 meter long pier. From Kalimantan it takes six hours by ship to the Tambelan Islands, from the Riau Islands even 28 hours.

Overfishing by outsiders threatens the livelihoods of local fishermen.
