The Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park is located on the island of Java , in the Indonesian province of East Java , and has existed since 1982. The middle part of the name refers to the Tengger people who live here . The national park includes the 3676 m high stratovolcano Semeru , the highest mountain on the island, as well as four volcanoes located in the Tengger Caldera , the most famous of which is Bromo . The caldera is filled by the Tengger Sand Sea ( Laut Pasir Tengger ). Four lakes and around 50 rivers are located on the terrain. The sand sea has been under special protection since 1919.
Flora and fauna
137 bird species live in the park, including the bankiva chicken , the rhinoceros bird and the Brahmin Weih . The 22 species of mammals include the marble cat , crab monkey , leopard and red dog . There is a very diverse flora, including beech and mulberry plants , Sterculiaceae , Casuarina junghuhniana and 200 species of endemic orchids .
Culture
The area in and around the park is inhabited by Tengger. The people of this ethnic group make up significant Hindu communities on the island of Java. It has features that are comparable to Bali's , but contain more animistic elements. It is believed that the Tengger population can be traced back to descendants of the Majapahit Empire, who moved to the Pulau Maduras mountains before the arrival of Islam in the region .
