The Sebangau National Park ( Indonesian : Taman Nasional Sebangau ) is a 580,000 hectare national park in Indonesia in the province of Central Kalimantan on Borneo . It consists mostly of peat bog forests and is bordered by the Katingan rivers and the eponymous Sebangau .

Overview of the Sebangau National Park

history

The Sebangau National Park is located in the west of the former “Mega Rice Project” area. For this project, more than one million hectares of peat bog forests were cleared and drained in the 1990s. The open area should be used for growing rice. The peat bog forests in the area of today's national park were cleared for years by 15 different companies before they were declared Sebangau National Park in 2004.

The WWF is carrying out a reforestation project on 150 hectares of the national park, which is financed by Deutsche Post and, since June 2011, by the Krombacher brewery . Among other things, the aim is to test which trees are best suited for reforestation at which location. Around 400 trees are required per hectare. In addition, a large-scale reduction of the greenhouse gases emitted is aimed at by permanently binding carbon.

There are 41 Dayak settlements in the Sebangau National Park . They make their living mainly as fishermen or farmers.

water

The Sebangau National Park is about 70 km wide and has a twelve meter thick “peat dome”. Over 4000 drainage channels run through the national park. They used to be used to remove the felled trees. Since the water level in peat bogs normally reaches a few centimeters below the surface, such channels can lead to the entire peat bog drying out, which can lead to severe fires during the dry season. In the Sebangau National Park, the canals are gradually interrupted by dams to reduce water runoff. For this purpose, a dam is built about every 100 meters. This measure leads to a renewed greening of the landscape; Around 2015 it is expected that the original groundwater level will be reached again.

flora

Among the 166 identified plant species are rarities such as ramin , the pitcher plant Nepenthes ampullaria , the black orchid and a number of medicinal plants.

fauna

Proboscis monkeys , sun bears , clouded leopards and orangutans can be found in the national park . Due to protective measures, the number of the latter rose again to 9,000 animals. In 1995 there were 13,000, in 2005 only 6900. 35 species of fish, 106 species of birds and 35 species of mammals were also found.
