The Kutai National Park is located on the island of Borneo , in the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan . It is located north of the Mahakam River and only 120 km from the provincial capital Samarinda .

The 198,604 hectare rainforest reserve is one of the last refuge for the endangered orangutans . The number of orangutans has fallen sharply between 2004 and 2009, from 600 to 60. The national park is also home to many other species of mammals such as sun bear , sambar , Banteng , maroon leaf monkey , Weißstirnlangur , pants langur , Proboscis Monkey , Gray Gibbon , clouded leopard , marbled cat , Flat-headed cat , great marten , otter civet and Indian otter .

Large forest fires damaged 60% of the forest cover in the El Niño years 1982/83 and 1997/98.
