Samarinda

Samarinda is the capital of the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Timur (East Kalimantan) on the island of Borneo . It is located on the Mahakam River , a few kilometers from the estuary delta. The Mahakam is the main route into the undeveloped hinterland. Samarinda is an important center for trade with tropical timber in Kalimantan , the Indonesian part of Borneo. These are mainly obtained from the natural tropical rainforests of Borneo, which, even before they were increasingly cleared for oil palm plantations , which are playing an increasingly important role as a source of energy , and the development of arable land for resettlers from the densely populated islands of the state led to their extensive destruction .
The city had a population of 334,851 at the last census.
geography
The city administration is responsible for an area of 718 km², which includes Samarinda itself and numerous villages. The urban area is completely enclosed by the Kutai Kerta Negara administrative district . The core city is located in a valley on alluvial land; the outskirts of Samarindas are mostly on hill country and elevated plains.
Infrastructure
The Samarinda International Airport is under construction as the successor to Temindel Airport, which is located in the city . It will be one of the largest airports in Kalimantan Timur and will be served directly from numerous cities in Indonesia.
