The Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park is a 151.96 km² large national park in Indonesia , located in the province of West Java on Java . In the center of the park are the two volcanoes Gunung Gede and Pangrango . The park was created in 1980 from already existing protected areas such as the Cibodas Botanical Garden , the Cimungkat Nature Reserve, the Situgunung Recreation Park and the Gunung Gede Pangrango Nature Reserve. Intensive biological and nature conservation research took place in the park. In 1977 UNESCO declared the area as part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves .

Topography and ecology

The Java Trogon , an endemic endemic species to West Java , can be found in the national park

Gunung Gede (2,958 m) and Pangrango (3,019 m) are twin volcanoes. The two peaks are connected by the Kandang Badak saddle (2,400 m). The mountain slopes are very steep and crossed by fast flowing streams that have dug deep valleys and gullies.

The lower and upper mountain regions of the park are well explored. In the north of Gunung Gede there is a field of Javanese edelweiss ( Anaphalis javanica ). The park is home to many species, the occurrence of which has so far only been documented here.

Flora and fauna

Gunung Gede-Pangrango National Park is populated by 251 of the 450 bird species found on Java. These include endangered species such as the Java hooded eagle , Java trogon and the Angelina scops owl .

Among the endangered mammal species in the park are some primates such as the silver gibbon , Java langur and black crested langur . Other mammal species include Java leopard , bengal cat , Indian muntjac , small rabbit , red dog , the porcupine Hystrix brachyura , sunda stink badger, and red marten .

tourism

Visitors usually enter the park through one of four entrances: Cibodas , Gunung Putri, or Selabintana; the Situ Gunung entrance only gives access to a lake region for local recreational purposes. The entrance of Cibodas is by far the most popular and also the seat of the park administration. In Cibodas you will find the Botanical Garden Cibodas on the edge of the park .
