The Wakatobi National Park is an approximately 13,900 km² marine national park in the Sulawesi Tenggara Province , Indonesia . The islands form their own administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Wakatobi . The national park is located southeast of the island of Sulawesi between the Banda Sea in the northeast and the Floresee in the southwest and is the third largest marine national park in Indonesia.

The name of the Wakatobi is an acronym of the four main islands of the Tukangbesi Islands : Wa ngi-wangi, Ka ledupa, To mia and Bi nongko. The park has been on the tentative list for World Heritage in Indonesia since 2005 .

The national park consists of four larger islands: Wangi-Wangi , Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko , as well as many smaller islands such as Tokobao, North Lintea, South Lintea, Kampenaune, Hoga and Tolandono. The highest point is 274 m on Wangi-Wangi, followed by Lagole Hill (271 m) on Tomia, Terpadu Hill (222 m) and Binongko Sampuagiwolo (203 m) on Kadelupa. The archipelago comprises 143 larger and smaller islands, only seven of which are inhabited with a total population of around 100,000 people, while the other islands are uninhabited. Of note are the Bajau villages, sea nomads who inhabit many of Indonesia's remote islands.

Diving tourism

The islands and reefs of the Wakatobi National Park are - because of the abundance of fish and their very good condition - a destination for diving tourism, and there are various diving areas around the islands . A diving resort was opened on Tolandono in 2013.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau described the islands as arguably the best diving area in the world in the 1980s . Arrival is possible by flight from Makassar or with a speedboat from Pelabuhan Mola or Makassar.
