Bau-Bau is the most important city on the island of Buton , which belongs to the Indonesian province of Sulawesi Tenggara . On June 21, 2001, Bau-Bau received the status of a city directly subordinate to the province. The port of Murhum serves the city for ferry traffic with other Indonesian islands.

The population at the end of 2011 was 139,717, of whom 68,997 were men and 70,720 women.

Located between 5.21 ° - 5.33 ° S and 122.30 ° - 122.47 ° E, the Bau-Bau river flows through the city.

history

During the 15th century Bau-Bau was the center of the Buton (or Wolio) kingdom. In 1542, the Button empire turned into an Islamic sultanate when Islam invaded the area. The first sultan of Buton was Lakilaponto, in office as Sultan Khamis Murhum Khalifate Kaimuddin. The 38th and last Sultan was Muhammad Falihi Kaimuddin in 1960. On February 19, 2005 Bau-Bau was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale. But there were no deaths.
