The Berbak National Park is located on the east coast of Sumatra and extends over a total area of 162,700 hectares. It is located in Tanjung Jabung Governorate in Jambi Province . The area was already protected by the Dutch in 1935, but was only later declared a national park. It is the largest untouched marshland in Southeast Asia.
The park consists of 600 km² of freshwater swamp forest and 1100 km² of peat forests. On the coast in the east there is muddy swampland and a border with mangrove forest . The tidal range on the coast is more than 2 m. The river Benu forms the southern border. The rivers that drain to the northeast are up to 20 m deep and carry acidic bog and peat water.
The park is accessible to the west via the Air Hitam Dalam (Deep Black Water) River . Tours are offered from other locations: Air Hitam Laut (in the east on the coast) and Simpang Kubu .
Flora and fauna
The park has preserved untouched flora and fauna of Sumatra. There are meranti ( Shorea sp. ) And many, also rare palm species such as z. B. Johanesteijmannia altifrons and Lepidaria kingii from the family of Loranthaceae with a red-purple flower.
The park is home to many animal species: Sumatran rhinoceros ( Dicerorhinus sumatrensis sumatrensis ), Sumatran tiger ( Panthera tigris sumatrae ), black-backed tapir ( Tapirus indicus ), stag pig ( Tragulus javanicus kanchil ), around 300 species of birds - a. a. Kingfishers ( Alcedinidae spp. ) And the tortoise species Orlitia borneensis and Batagur tortoise ( Batagur baska ).
