Seribu (the word in Indonesian means thousand , or Kepulauan Seribu means thousand islands ) is an archipelago of around 130 small islands, which is located approximately 15 to 60 km off the coast of Java near the city of Jakarta . The islands form an administrative district ( Kabupaten ) of the capital district Jakarta.

The population of the islands, only some of which are inhabited, is around 15,000. Most people live on Pulau Kelapa Island , which is 15 km from Jakarta. The administrative center of the archipelago is Pramuka on the island of Pramuka ( Pulau Pramuka ). Panjang ( Pulau Panjang ) is the only island with a short runway for propeller planes. The islands are a popular destination for Jakarta residents and can be reached by speedboats from Jakarta's Ancol Marina . The islands closer to the coast are more affected by the pollution from the port of Jakarta in Tanjung Priok .

Other well-known islands are:

  • Pulau Bidadari: Located near the coast, resort
  • Pulau Ayer: famous beach, resort
  • Pulau Kotok: known as a snorkeling and diving area
  • Pulau Putri: numerous restaurants, resort
  • Pulau Sepa: one of the smaller islands, good beaches
