The Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park is a national park on the largest Moluccas -Insel the northern province of Maluku Utara , Halmahera in Indonesia . The park is under the special protection of the international bird protection organization BirdLife International . One of the core tasks is to ensure the survival of at least 23 endemic bird species ( biodiversity hotspot ). The Aketajawe Lolobata Park covers an area of ​​167,300 hectares and, following initial efforts, was made a national park in 1995 and 2004 .

Geographical location

The national park is located in the north of the Moluccan island of Halmahera. It connects two different core areas, the Aketajawe area and the Lolobata area, which are located in different districts and touch the territory of several municipalities. At the same time, a uniform administration could be established, which is distributed over the districts of Central Halmahera , East Halmahera and Tidore City Islands . The park is also on the biogeographical dividing line between Asian and Australian fauna , the so-called Wallace Line .

Flora and fauna

The vegetation of the Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park consists primarily of lowland and mountain rainforest . There are many different ecosystems, in which beach forests, mangroves , wetlands in the lowlands, river banks and rocky mountain meadows occur. The rainforests have a high biodiversity; so come kauri trees ( Agathis ), Indian mahogany , Octomeles sumatrana , Koordersiodendron pinnatum (related to cashew ), valuable merbau , Pometia pinnata , Nyatoh (Palaquium obtusifolium) and more ago.

Of the 51 mammal species found in Maluku Utara , 28 were found on Halmahera Island alone. Seven of them are endemic to the Moluccan region, one animal in turn, which comes from the family of the climbing bees (Phalangeridae), the Ornate Cuscus , can only be found on Halmahera.

Of the 243 bird species of the northern Moluccas, 211 were recorded on the island of Halmahera. 24 of these are found only on this island, including birds of paradise as Wallace's Standardwing , the umbrella cockatoo that Blaukopf pigeon or from the families of cuckooshrike of Halmahera Cuckooshrike , the family of kingfishers of Sombre Kingfisher and the family of the Rails the Invisible Rail , the family of the Orioles , the Dusky-brown Oriole and from the family of Accipitridae the Moluccan goshawk . Other endemic animal species come from the families of grasshoppers (Gomphocerinae), dragonflies (Odonata) and butterflies (Lepidoptera) as well as molluscs (Mollusca).

Human settlement

The park is inhabited by semi-nomads , the so-called Togutil (also Tobelo Dalam , or: Forest Tobelo ).

Nature and culture

On the basis of a national conservation plan, four areas worthy of protection should be brought into focus. These were the districts of Aketajawe , Lolobata , Saketa and Gunung Gamkonora . The reason for this was the preparation for tourism, because the general sights, the waterfalls and the multitude of animals attract.
