The Barisan Selatan is a national park in Sumatra with a total area of 356,800 hectares. Together with the Gunung Leuser National Park and the Kerinchi-Seblat National Park , it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 under the name Tropical Rainforests of Sumatra . The Barisan Selatan is part of the Sumatra mountain range that runs through from north to south - the Barisan Mountains, (indon .: Bukit Bariasan )

Flora and fauna

In this reserve one encounters the still relatively untouched flora and fauna of South Sumatra. The fertility of the volcanic soils and the most humid climate of the entire island form the basis for a species-rich vegetation. For example, the titan arum ( Amorphophallus titanum ) can be found there . The park is home to many birds and in particular endangered mammal species such as the Sumatran elephants (about 500 animals), Striped Sumatran rabbit , and the Sumatran rhino , with an estimated population of about 70 copies and the Sumatran tiger with a population about half as large. In addition, numerous other partly threatened large animal species, are clouded leopards , tapirs , sambar deer , Indian muntjac , wild boar , Siamangs and Gibbons before.

Protection of the park

The park was first established in 1935 as a sanctuary for wild animals and expanded into a national park in 1982. Since that year it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with other national parks, but since 2011 it has also been on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger .

The park recently lost 20% of its forest cover through illegal agriculture, so the nature conservation organization WWF came to the rescue. The WWF found that more than 450 km² of the park area was used for coffee growing purposes. Nowadays, the organization works in agreement with the global coffee manufacturers (including the Nestlé group) to avoid buying illegally grown coffee.
