The National Park Gunung Halimun is a 400 km² large national park in Indonesia , located in the province of West Java on Java . In the center of the park, which was founded in 1992, are the two volcanoes Salak and Halimun . The park is near the more famous Gunung Gede-Pangrango National Park, but the national park is best accessed from Sukabumi .

The park is an important water catchment area and is home to some rare animal species.

topography

The peaks reach a height of 1,929 meters and are often shrouded in fog.

ecology

The park is a union of two important ecosystems around the mountains Halimun and Salak, which are connected by an 11-kilometer forest corridor.

The park is one of the last retreats for the black crested langur

The lower zones are home to populations of the endangered West Java gibbon ( Hylobates moloch moloch ) - a subspecies of the silver gibbon . Halimun Mountain is their best protected habitat, but their area is limited to a thin ring around the park as the species is not found above 1,200 meters. The park is home to black crested langur ( Trachypithecus auratus ) and other endemic species; Half of the 145 species of birds found in the park are mainly found here on Java.

Chevron Pacific Indonesia is involved in restoring some areas of the park.

Human settlement

The Kasepuhan are an ethnic group of 5,300 people who live in the southern part of the park. Their main village is Ciptagelar.
