Kasepuhan

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kasepuhan are an ethnic group of around 5,300 people. They live in the southern area of Halimun National Park in West Java Province , Indonesia . Halimun National Park is within the boundaries of kabupaten Sukabumi , Bogor, and South Banten .

According to oral information, the Kasepuhan have lived in this area for about 570 years. Around 1430 the ancestors of the Kasepuhan lived in the area of Bogor, east of Gunung Halimun. At that time there were also several Pajajaran kingdoms in West Java, for example in Banten, but also in Bogor. The Pajajaran followed Hinduism as their main religion, but they combined it with animist ethnic religions and Sudanese traditions. The Kasepuhan claim that they are genetically related to the Baduy , another traditional group in West Java.

Today the Kasepuhan are under the influence of Islam , but they do not strictly follow the rules of this religion. Just like their forefathers, different traditions and religions merge with them in a unique Kasepuhan tradition .

The Kasepuhan live almost self-sufficient economically. They mainly live from agriculture. The agricultural activities can be divided into three groups: sawah (wet rice cultivation on horizontal fields), ladang ( slash and burn on slopes, among other things for dry rice ) and kebun (gardens on horizontal fields). About 85% of the kasepuhan's land consists of sawah , 10% ladang and 5% kebun .
