The Bukit Baka-Bukit Raya National Park is an approximately 1,810 km² national park on Borneo on the border of the provinces of Kalimantan Barat and Kalimantan Tengah , Indonesia . The park is named after the mountains Bukit Baka (1,620 m) and Bukit Raya (2,278 m), which are part of the Schwaner mountain range.

The national park is part of the Heart of Borneo government protection project.

Flora and fauna

817 plant species are represented in the park, including the Dipterocarpaceae , Myrtaceae , Sapotaceae , Euphorbiaceae , Lauraceae and Ericaceae families . Plants endemic to the island include Symplocos rayae , Gluta sabahana , Dillenia beccariana , Lithocarpus coopertus , Selaginella magnifica, and Tetracera glaberrima . The park protects the habitats of Sunda clouded leopards , Borneo orangutans , sun bears ( Helarctos malayanus euryspilus ) Maronenlanguren which Plumploriart nycticebus borneanus from Sambarhirschen and flying squirrel . The bird species in the park include a. Black hornbill , helmeted hornbill , green wing dove , Little Cuckoo Dove ( Macropygia ruficeps ) and Bornean peacock-pheasant .

Human settlement

Indigenous peoples in the park include groups from the Dayak Limbai, Ransa , Kenyilu , Ot Danum , Malahui , Kahoi, and Kahayan .

Protection and threat

In 1978 a nature reserve of 500 km² was set up around the Bukit Raya and expanded to 1,100 km² the following year. In 1982 the Bukit Baka nature reserve was established, which covered 1,000 km². After several border changes at both reserves, the two protected areas were united to the Bukit Baka-Bukit Raya National Park in 1992, which covers 1,810 km².

The park has suffered from illegal logging activities since the late 20th century.
