Way Kambas National Park is located on the island of Sumatra . With 130,000 hectares, it is the island's smallest national park and is located on the east coast. Within the park is the Sumatran Rhino Sanctuary .

flora

The park, founded in 1989, is dominated by mangroves ( Avicennia marina ) and palm species ( nipa palms ), swamp forests and steppe areas. Secondary forests have replaced the primeval forest areas that have not been influenced by human hands. Furthermore prevail screw pines , Tea Family , dipterocarpaceae and Myrtenheiden ( Melaleuca leucadendra ) and Syzygium ago.

fauna

The reserve is one of the last refuge areas for the Sumatran rhinoceros. In total, about 25–35 of the rare rhinos live in Way Kambas. Other large animal species in the area are Sumatran elephants , Sumatran tigers , black-backed tapirs , sun bears and sambar deer . Primates are represented by black-handed gibbons , Siamangs , pig monkeys , slow loris and Sunda goblin tarsiers. Among the smaller predators, the binturong , the ribbon roller and the otter civette are worth mentioning. In the swamps you can find crocodiles and the narrow-snouted, smaller Sunda Gaviale . In addition, there is a rich bird life with more than 300 bird species. This includes the rare golden duck, which nests in the grassy plains.

tourism

In addition to the numerous possible tours through the area, the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) is particularly popular with the Indonesians . Using know-how imported from Thailand, the elephants have been given a chance of survival since 1986 and the results are demonstrated in a playful way.
