The Batang Gadis National Park (officially: Indonesian Taman Nasional Batang Gadis ) is an approximately 1,080 km² national park on Sumatra in the Sumatra Utara Province , Indonesia . The park is named after the Batang Gadis River that flows through the park.

Flora and fauna

There are 47 species of mammals, 247 species of birds, 240 vascular plants and 1,500 microorganisms in the park . The fauna includes u. a. Sumatran tiger , black-backed tapir , the porcupine Hystrix brachyura , Asian golden cats , Bengal cats , Indian muntjacs , the goral Naemorhedus sumatrae , small Kantschil , Binturong , sun bear , sambar deer , Ichtyopis glutinosa and the pointed toad . On an area of 200 square meters, researchers found 242 vascular plant species or about 1% of Indonesia's flora.

In 2008 the population of Sumatran tigers was estimated to be between 30 and 100 specimens. In 2013, their number was estimated at 23–76, or 20% of the total population.

Protection and threat

Parts of the forest in the national park were placed under protection by the Dutch colonial administration as early as 1921. The proposal for a national park came from the local government in 2003. In 2004, the Batang Gadis National Park was declared. The protection of Batang Gadis as a national park is part of a plan to set up a biodiversity protection corridor in North Sumatra, which would be connected to the Gunung Leuser National Park in the north of the island via further protected areas .

The wildlife in the park is threatened by poaching and interference by an Australian gold mining company that holds a 200,000 acre concession that overlaps the national park area.
