The blue-headed fruit pigeon ( Ptilinopus hyogastra ) is a species of pigeon birds. It occurs exclusively in a small range in Southeast Asia. The way of life of the blue-headed fruit pigeon has so far been little researched.

Characteristics of the species

The body size of the blue-headed fruit pigeon corresponds roughly to that of a laughing pigeon . However, it has the compact physique, as it is characteristic of downy pigeons . There is no gender dimorphism. The blue-headed fruit pigeon is very similar to the caruncle fruit pigeon . However, it lacks the granular outgrowths on the wax skin that are characteristic of this species.

The plumage is deep green and shimmers bronze. The head is blue-gray. Two light blue-gray stripes each run over the shoulder and the wings. The pigeon has a large purple spot on its belly. The under tail-coverts are yellow. The beak is blue-gray at the base and brightens to a yellowish tone towards the tip. The iris is brown. The feet are dark gray.

The blue-headed fruit pigeon is found on the northern Maluku islands of Bacan and Halmahera . She is a forest dweller. Otherwise nothing is known about their lifestyle.
