The caruncle fruit pigeon ( Ptilinopus granulifrons ), also called wart fruit pigeon , is a species of pigeon birds. It only occurs in the Obi Islands in Southeast Asia. The species is classified as Endangered by the IUCN . Relatively little is known about the way of life of this species.

Appearance

The caruncle pigeon reaches a body length of 22 centimeters. The species is very similar to the blue-headed fruit pigeon . Compared to this one, it has a slightly longer tail. The main distinguishing feature, however, is the wax skin, which has granulate-like outgrowths in the form of a fleshy knot at its base.

The plumage is deep green and shimmers bronze. The head is blue-gray. Two light blue-gray stripes each run over the shoulder and the wings. The pigeon has a large purple spot on its belly. The under tail-coverts are yellow. The beak is blue-gray at the base and brightens to a yellowish tone towards the tip. The iris is brown. The feet are dark gray.

Distribution area and behavior

The caruncle fruit pigeon is an endemic species of the Obi Islands in the north of the Moluccas . Although it is widespread on this group of islands, the population is very low overall. It is a forest-dwelling pigeon that occurs in primary and secondary forests, on the edges of forests and on cultivated land covered with trees. The IUCN estimates the population at 3,000 to 10,000 individuals. The populations are decreasing, which is mainly attributed to logging in the habitat of this pigeon.
