Charles Frederick "Fred" Bodsworth (born October 11, 1918 in Port Burwell , Ontario , † September 15, 2012 in Toronto ) was a Canadian writer, journalist and amateur naturalist.

Life

Fred Bodsworth was considered a Canadian novelist, but his novels and stories have mainly related to nature and animal portrayals, and little to the representation of social circles. Many of his books contain animal stories, such as The Last of the Curlews (1954, German 1977: The last Eskimobrachvogel ), which is about the restless and futile search of an Eskimo curlew for a partner. In 1972 the book was adapted as an animated film by Hanna-Barbera . Also in The Strange One (1959, German 1995: The stranger Barra ) are animals here barnacles, at the center. The Sparrow's Fall (1967, German 1973: run feet, run ) takes up the struggle for survival of a young Indian couple , the struggle with winter and nature. In addition, it is about social aspects such as the proselytizing of the Indians and the struggle of the individual, dealing with the necessity of struggle as well as its moral and ethical questions. Bodsworth's descriptions are based on extensive own research activities such as ornithological expertise.

Bodsworth worked as a journalist for The St. Thomas Times-Journal, Toronto Star and Maclean’s .

Awards

He received the Matt Cohen Prize in 2002 for his books.
