Ulrich Immenga

Ulrich Immenga (* 5. June 1934 in Helmstedt ) is a German legal scholar with a research focus on business law and emeritus professors .

Life

Immenga grew up in Helmstedt, graduated from high school in Braunschweig in 1954 and initially completed an apprenticeship at Deutsche Bank . After this he studied for two semesters Economics at the Technical University of Braunschweig . This was followed by the study of law. Immenga studied law at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , at the Free University of Berlin , at the Saarland University and at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . After taking the second state examination in Munich in 1964 after completing his legal clerkship in Würzburg , Immenga became a research associate with Ernst-Joachim Mestmäcker at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , where he received his doctorate two years later on the subject of competition restrictions in state-controlled markets . After he and Mestmäcker at the University of Bielefeld had changed, habilitation Ulrich Immenga in 1970 on the personalistic corporation , a comparative law oriented work. He was initially a scientific adviser and professor at Bielefeld University, but went to the University of Lausanne in 1971 , where he held the chair for German law , and then in 1974 to the University of Göttingen. In Göttingen, Immenga headed the department for international and foreign commercial law. He turned down offers to the Free University of Berlin (1979) and the University of Cologne (1987). From 1990 to 1991 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law. He retired in 1999 in Göttingen. Immenga has also taught as visiting professor in the United States , Switzerland , France , Spain , Japan, and China .

In addition to his work as a professor, Ulrich Immenga advised the European Commission and in 1979 he became a member of the Monopolies Commission . From 1986 to 1989 he was the chairman of the Monopolies Commission. He works as a consulting lawyer in an internationally oriented law firm.

Immenga is co-author of Immenga / Mestmäcker , a commentary on German and European competition law . In addition, he published series on banking and stock exchange law and the journals European magazine for commercial law (EuZW) and magazine for competition law (ZWeR). At ZWeR he is particularly active in the area of peer review . Immenga is also the author of numerous articles.

In his scientific work he advocates a free, market and value-oriented economic and legal system. He takes the view that the markets cannot be completely left to their own devices, but that regulatory framework conditions are required in order to guarantee the responsibility of the market participants. Immenga advocates effective instruments to prevent restraints of competition, whereby excessive restrictions on freedom through state regulation, but also the private exercise of power, should be restricted.

Honors

Ulrich Immenga has had an honorary doctorate from the University of Orléans since 1986 and the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class, since 1990 .
