Hans-Joachim Mertens (legal scholar)

Hans-Joachim Mertens (* 25. July 1934 in Guben ) is a German legal scholar and Emeritus Professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

Life

From 1954 Mertens studied law in Kiel and Lausanne . He completed his studies in 1957 with the first state examination in law. In February 1961 he was at the University of Kiel with a thesis on self-commitment of the administration on the basis of equality for Dr. iur. PhD. After the second state examination in law, which he passed in Hamburg in July 1961 , Mertens was initially a consultant at the Federal Office for Foreign Trade Information . In 1963 he became a research assistant with Hermann Lange at the University of Mainz , where he completed his habilitation in 1966 with a thesis on the concept of financial loss in civil law . The following year, Mertens accepted a position at the University of Lausanne . In 1969 he moved to the University of Frankfurt am Main , where he held the chair for civil law, commercial law, commercial law, comparative law, international private law, compensation law and corporation law until his retirement.

As an author, Mertens is involved in numerous commentaries on tort , damage, stock corporation and GmbH law . He is co-editor of the magazine Die Aktiengesellschaft .

With him u. a. Ursula Stein and completed her habilitation a. a. Andreas Cahn , Erich Schanze , Martin Schulz and Gerald Spindler .

Mertens is married and has a daughter.
