Hermann Lange (lawyer)

Hermann Lange (born January 24, 1922 in Dresden ; † July 28, 2018 in Tübingen ) was a German legal scholar .

Life

After his Abitur at the Kreuzgymnasium Dresden, Hermann Lange studied at the University of Leipzig , Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg , among others with Fritz Pringsheim and Franz Wieacker . In 1942 he presented his first legal state examination at the Higher Regional Court Dresden from, in September 1944 he was in Leipzig with a thesis on " The quota as a legal concept " for Dr. iur. PhD. After serving in the war and being a prisoner of war, he returned to Dresden, but moved to West Germany in March 1948. In 1949 he passed his second state examination in Hamburg and at the end of 1949 worked as a research assistant at the University of Freiburg . In 1953 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on " Damages and private punishment in the private law theory of the Middle Ages ", received the venia legendi for the subjects of Roman law, civil law and modern history of private law and initially worked as a private lecturer at the Albert Ludwigs University in Freiburg.

Lange became professor at the Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck in 1955 , professor at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel in 1957 , in 1962 at the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz and finally from 1966 at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen as professor for Roman and German Civil law and modern history of private law. He retired in 1987.

In 1971 he was elected a full member of the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature . After reunification , he got involved in building up the law faculty of the Technical University of Dresden .

Lange was one of two sons from the marriage of Arno Lange and Catharina Lange nee. Brown. He was married to Ulrike geb. Moser; the marriage has two children.

Hermann Lange's main research areas were in the area of compensation law , family law and medieval legal history . He published numerous scientific papers on it.

The monograph Damage Law , first published in 1979 as Volume 1 of the series Handbuch des Obligations Law published by Joachim Gernhuber , is considered a central work on German damage compensation law. The work was published in the second edition in 1990 and has been co-supervised by Gottfried Schiemann since 2003 (third edition) . Its influence on the German family law owes length of the long-standing commentary of family law in Großkommentar of Soergel four runs. In addition, his work Roman Law in the Middle Ages on the glossators is noteworthy.
