The downy pigeons ( Ptilinopus ) are a species-rich genus of pigeon birds. They are among the fruit pigeons .

Appearance

Downy pigeons are compactly built pigeons. In physique they resemble the green pigeons . Most species have a body size that corresponds to that of the laughing dove . The smallest species is the dwarf fruit dove , which is 13 to 15 centimeters long and sparrow-sized. The royal fruit pigeon, on the other hand, reaches the length of a wood pigeon with a body length of up to 28 centimeters . Many species are extremely colorful. The male of the royal fruit pigeon has a broad orange-colored band that is sharply set off against the gray-green head plumage. Many species wear red caps. In addition to the royal fruit pigeon, this is the case with the red-capped fruit pigeon , the purple- capped fruit pigeon and the red-bellied fruit pigeon .

Spread and behavior

Downy pigeons are found in Polynesia , the Moluccas , the Solomon Islands , Sulawesi , New Guinea, Sumatra , Java , Kalimantan and the Philippines, as well as in the east and northeast of the Australian continent. Some species have only a very small range. The Makatea pigeon , for example, occurs exclusively on the 24 square kilometer island of Makatea .

The diet consists mainly of fruits and berries. Some species also consume buds, young green parts of plants and small invertebrates. The nest is built in trees or bushes and not on the ground. Presumably in all species the clutch consists of only one egg.

species

The genus of the downy pigeons comprises fifty species:
