The orange-bellied fruit pigeon ( Ptilinopus iozonus ) is a species of pigeon birds. It occurs in several subspecies only on a few Southeast Asian islands.

Appearance

The orange-bellied fruit pigeon reaches a body length of 21 centimeters. In terms of body size and build , it is similar to the purple cap fruit pigeon . It is a short-tailed species whose plumage is predominantly bright green. Depending on the subspecies, it has a slate-gray or deep red shoulder mark on its shoulders. The feathers of the wings are lined with yellow. The very large orange spot on the belly is characteristic of the species. The under tail-coverts are whitish-yellow.

The beak is reddish and brightens a yellow towards the tip.

Spread and behavior

The orange-bellied fruit pigeon is an endemic species of pigeon in New Guinea and the neighboring islands. It occurs on Salawari, Waigeo , Aru , Yapen , Manam, Tarawi, Karkar and Kalriru , among others . It is a common species in the lowlands of New Guinea. Orange-bellied fruit pigeons are forest dwellers who prefer to stay at the forest edges. They prefer primary forests and older secondary forests. It can usually be observed in small flocks consisting of three to ten individuals. It is often loosely associated with other fruit pigeons . They probably breed throughout the year. The nest is found in trees. The clutch consists of a single white egg.
