The fishing pigeon reaches a body length of 36 centimeters. It is a relatively large, strongly built fruit pigeon . The head and the underside of the body are smoke gray. The pigeon has a red spot on the face below the eye, each of which runs over the ear region and which are connected to one another by a black neck band. The back neck and top coat are dark gray. The back and the rump are dark green. The under tail coverts and the fletching of the legs are gray-green with cream-colored speckles. The wings of the hand are dark. The feathers of the outer arm wings have yellow outer hems. The iris is brown. The beak is greenish, the feet are reddish.

Behavior and habitat

The fishing pigeon is an endemic species of the mountain forests on Sulawesi. It is relatively rare in its area of distribution, but is counted among the non-endangered species by the IUCN ( least concern ). Their altitude distribution on Sulawesi ranges from 1,000 to 3,000 meters. It occurs most often at altitudes above 2,000 meters. It seems to be insensitive to logging because it is also seen in regions with deforestation.

She is a very shy and inconspicuous species, which is also not noticeable by her singing. She lives mostly singly. The nest is built low in the bushes or in trees and is often not more than a meter above the ground. The nest is built as a loose platform in typical pigeon fashion. The clutch consists of only one egg. Otherwise nothing is known about the reproductive habits of this species.
