The pigeon pigeon ( Ptilinopus viridis ), also known as the spring fruit pigeon , is a small species of pigeon birds that is one of the so-called fruit pigeons . It has the high-contrast plumage typical of downy pigeons and occurs on some Indonesian islands and in New Guinea.

The population of the Redlatz fruit pigeon was classified in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016 as “ Least Concern (LC) ” = “not endangered”.

Appearance

The Rotlatz fruit pigeon reaches a body length of 21 centimeters. It is a small, very compact pigeon with a comparatively short tail that is slightly smaller than a laughing pigeon . The tail is between 5.1 and 5.6 centimeters. The beak is between 1.2 and 1.4 inches long. There is no gender dimorphism .

The front of the head is blue-gray up to the middle of the parting. The back of the head, neck and coat are bright olive green with a slight bronze shimmer. The front small wing-coverts are ash-gray and thus form a shoulder spot, the wing-coverts are otherwise green. The individual feathers of the large wing covers also have sulfur-yellow edges. The wings of the hand and arm are blackish with a dark green tinge on the outer flags. The back and the upper tail-coverts are olive-colored, the tail dark green with yellow tips.

The chin is blue-gray. From the throat to the middle of the chest runs a deep dark red spot with a sharp demarcation from the green on the lower chest. The under-tail-coverts with their broad yellow hems give a spot drawing. The beak is yellow-green with a red base. The iris is yellow to reddish, the narrow eye ring is yellow. The feet are purple.

In young birds, the red patch on the chest is still small, often limited to the chest and interspersed with olive-colored feathers.

Possible confusion

There are several downy-footed pigeon species in the range of the Rotlatz fruit pigeon, with which it can be confused.

The yellow-bellied fruit pigeon ( Ptilinopus solomonensis ) can be distinguished from the red- rump fruit pigeon by its bright yellow chest band. In both sexes, red plumage areas are missing on the underside of the body. There is a danger of confusion mainly with the young birds. The coral dove ( Ptilinopus rivoli ) is larger. The males have a white chest band. The under tail covers are green or yellow in both sexes. The males of the royal fruit dove ( Ptilinopus superbus ) have a purple-colored head cap. A wide orange band runs from the back of the neck to the sides of the neck. The throat is silver. The breast plumage is gray with lighter tips. The underbust is set off from the white belly by a blue ribbon. The belly sides are green with white spots. The females are mostly green with a small blue-black patch on the back of the head. Both sexes lack the red spot on the lower body.

Distribution area

The redlap dove occurs from the Moluccas to New Guinea to the Solomon Islands . The Moluccas Islands populated by this pigeon species include Buru , Ambon , Haruku , Seram , Nusa Laut , Saparua , Maar, Gorom and Manawoka . Arfak, Fakfak , Kumawa, Wandammen, Foja, Cyclops, Bewani and Torricelli are among the regions of New Guinea in which the red-rind pigeon occurs . It also populates the following islands bordering New Guinea: Gebe, Waigeo , Gagi, Kofiau, Mitsoll, Batanta , Salawati , Numfor , Manam , Biak , Marai, Meos Num, Papen, Yapen , Goodenough Island , Fergusson Island , Normanby and the Trobriand -Islands . It also occurs in the Bismarck Archipelago .

The Rotlatz-Taube is a forest-dwelling pigeon that occurs preferentially in the primary forests of the lowlands. But it also colonizes secondary forests and forests in which selective logging has taken place, as well as arable land, plantations and even areas on the outskirts, if there are still remnants of forest there. Their height distribution extends up to 700 meters in altitude on Seram , up to 800 meters in altitude on Bougainville . In New Guinea it occurs even at altitudes of 1200  m .

Way of life

The redlap pigeon usually lives solitary or in pairs, it is only rarely seen in small groups. However, it is occasionally associated with red wart fruit pigeons. It occasionally aggressively drives other pigeon species out of fruit-bearing trees. It eats a wide range of berries and fruits, which it pecks from the branches in the top of trees. It is presumably not tied to any specific reproductive time. The nest is a pigeon-typical loose platform made of twigs. The clutch consists of a single egg.
