Haruku ( Indonesian Pulau Haruku ) is a 178 km² Indonesian island in the southwest of Seram in the province of Maluku and is one of the Lease Islands .

Haruku forms a district ( Kecamatan ) of the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) of the Central Moluccas .

Adjacent to the west is the island of Ambon and to the east Saparua . As on most of the islands of the Moluccas , spices , nutmeg , cloves , curry , caraway and ginger are grown or produced.

The first Europeans to reach Haruku in 1527, the Dutch followed in 1590. Haruku played a special role in World War II, when the Japanese set up a labor camp for Australians and British prisoners of war.
