Duau , also called "Normanby", is a volcanic , L-shaped island in the Pacific Ocean , about 850 km² in size . It is the southernmost of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands , which are part of the Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea .

The island is located 16 kilometers northeast of the East Cape in New Guinea , from which it is separated by the Goschen Strait , and a few kilometers south of Fergusson Island , from which it is separated by the Dawson Strait . In the southeast the land mass rises to a maximum height of 1158 m above sea level. The nature of the surface is characterized by mountainous terrain in the southeast, and flat beaches and marshland on the coasts. The capital of the island is Esa'ala in the north.

In 1873 the island was toured by the British captain John Moresby , who named it after the then Governor of Queensland , George Phipps, 2nd Marquess of Normanby . Gold used to be mined on Normanby , nowadays mainly copra and lumber are mined there.

The 11 settlements in the west of the island belong to the Dobu Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area, which also includes the eastern part of the neighboring Fergusson Island . The eastern part of Normanby Island with the remaining 30 settlements forms the Duau Rural LLG (Local Level Government) Area.
