The bald pigeon ( Ptilinopus cinctus ) is a species of pigeon birds. It occurs in several subspecies in Southeast Asia.

Appearance

The white-headed downy pigeon reaches a body length of 32 to 34 centimeters. It is therefore a medium-sized fruit pigeon . The numerous subspecies are distinguished by a slightly different head and chest color. A gender dimorphism, however, does not exist.

Adult whitehead downy pigeons have a white head and neck as well as a white chest, which, depending on the subspecies, has a grayish to yellowish tinge. The coat, the back and the wings are black. In the direction of the rump, this black turns into a dark olive green. The breast is set off from the olive-yellow belly by a wide black band. The tail feathers end in a lighter end band, which is noticeably different depending on the subspecies. The under tail-coverts are gray.

The flight is quick and direct. The wings produce a whistling flight noise as an instrumental sound .

Spread and behavior

The bald pigeon is an endemic species of the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia. It settles in Bali , Lombok , Sumbawa , Flores , Pantar , Alor , Timor , Atauro , Wetar , Romang , Leti , Moa , Luang, Sermata , Teun, Damar , Babar and Nila. It is a common species in many regions of its range. Its habitat is moist, evergreen rainforests. It occurs preferentially in primary forests and is particularly common in the hill country.

It lives individually or in small groups and is occasionally kept loose with other fruit-eating pigeons. It is considered a semi-nomadic species because the population numbers fluctuate noticeably over the course of the year. In her way of life she is very much tied to trees. She rarely gets to the ground. She eats fruits and berries. The breeding period for white-headed downy pigeons kept in human care was 21 days. The young birds left the nest 14 days after hatching.
