from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph J. "Joe" Carter (* 6. November 1927 in Midland , Georgia ; † 15. June 2001 in Chicago ) was an American blues - guitarist and singer in the Chicago blues scene.

Joe Carter took guitar lessons from Lee Willis in Georgia as a teenager ; In 1952 he moved to Chicago , where he met Muddy Waters . There he founded his first band with Smokey Smothers on guitar and Lester Davenport on harmonica, although no recordings were made with this formation. He was offered a record deal by Cobra Records , but declined because he preferred to live off club appearances. In the 1950s he made regular appearances at the 708 Club, one of the most famous blues clubs on Chicago's South Side at the time , where he was known as Joe "Elmore James, Jr." Carter because he had a perfect command of Elmore James ' slide guitar style. For many years Carter worked outside the music scene as a packer; it was not until 1976 that he made his first album, which he recorded for Barrelhouse Records . In the late 1980s he performed occasionally at Lilly's nightclub on Chicago's North Side , accompanied by the band The Ice Cream Men . Cancer ended his career in the early 1990s.
