Helmut Denk

Helmut Denk (born March 5, 1940 in Scheibbs ) is an Austrian physician . From July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2013 he was President of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).

Life

Helmut Denk studied medicine at the University of Vienna , where he received his doctorate sub auspiciis in 1964 . He then worked for five years as a university assistant and then for two years as a research assistant at the Pathological Institute of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine , New York. Helmut Denk was also a visiting professor at the Pharmacological Institute of Yale University in 1974/75 . In 1973 he completed his specialist training in pathology, cytodiagnostics and human genetics and completed his habilitation in the same year at the University of Vienna in general and experimental pathology . Three years later, he added a habilitation in pathological anatomy . In 1977 Helmut Denk became Professor of Pathology at the Clinical Institute for Pathology at the University of Vienna. In 1983 he became a professor at the Department of Pathological Anatomy at the University of Graz , since 2004 Medical University of Graz called . After he had been chairman of this institute for many years, he retired in 2008. He is still a member of the scientific advisory board of the AG History of Medicine / Medical Humanities of the Commission for the History and Philosophy of Sciences at the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW).

From 1991 to 1997 Helmut Denk was Vice President of the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (FWF). He was also a member of the Supreme Sanitary Council from 2000 to 2005 .

Denk was a member of the editorial board of many magazines. a. the World Journal of Gastroenterology, the Journal of Tumor Marker Oncology, the Virchows Archive, or Applied Pathology.

Helmut Denk is married and has three children.

honors and awards

In 1998, Denk was awarded the highest order of science in the Republic of Austria, the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art , of which he has been Chairman of the Curia since 2003.

In 1989 he was elected a corresponding and in 1991 a real member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 1996 he became a member of the Royal College of Pathologists in London, United Kingdom and in 1998 he became a member of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina .

For his professional achievements, Denk was also awarded numerous other prizes, including a. with the Kardinal Innitzer Prize (1994), the Lucie Bolte Prize (1990) or the Sandoz Prize for Medicine (1974).
