The Gede is an active stratovolcano in the Indonesian province of Jawa Barat in the west of the island of Java . The volcano is located in the Gunung Gede-Pangrango National Park . When the weather is clear, the two peaks can be seen from the capital Jakarta ; The cities of Cianjur , Sukabumi and Bogor are in the immediate vicinity .
The volcano consists of two peaks, the last active 2958 meter high Gede and the 3019 meter higher Pangrango . The summit area of the volcanic complex is occupied by a five by three kilometer caldera with the Pangrango on the northwestern edge. The last active, steep-walled crater of the Gede is east of the caldera. On the slopes of the volcanic complex there are deposits of two large debris avalanches . One of the debris avalanches reached the area of today's city of Cianjur; almost 20 kilometers east of the volcano. Many lava flows have flowed down the slopes of the Gede, some of them in historical times . Between 1747 and 1957 the Gede erupted over twenty times; mostly short, explosive eruptions .
