The pant langur ( Presbytis hosei ) is a species of primate from the group of slim monkeys (Presbytini). It is named after Charles Hose .
features
Pant langurs reach a head body length of 48 to 56 centimeters, the tail is 65 to 84 centimeters longer than the body. Males weigh 6 to 7 kilograms and are slightly heavier than females, who weigh 5.5 to 6 kilograms. They are relatively small, slender primates. The fur is gray on the back, white on the chest and stomach and black on the hands and feet, but the color may vary slightly depending on the subspecies. The face is pink and has black bands on the cheeks, the head is provided with a mop of hair.
distribution and habitat
Pant langurs are only found on Borneo , they mainly inhabit the northern and eastern parts of the island. Their habitat is primarily primary forests at an altitude of 1000 to 1300 meters. Sometimes they can also be found in secondary forests or plantations.
Way of life
These primates are diurnal tree dwellers who only come to the ground occasionally. They live in groups of 6 to 8 (sometimes a little more) animals, which consist of a male, several females and their offspring.
Their diet consists mainly of young leaves, but they also eat fruits, seeds and flowers. Like all slender monkeys, they have a multi-chambered stomach that helps them utilize their food. Sometimes they come to the ground to eat soil.
The female usually gives birth to a single cub. Young animals are initially whitish in color and have cross-shaped fur on the back. The cubs are weaned at one year and sexually mature at four to five years.
threat
One of the main threats to the pantyhose is the loss of habitat due to ongoing deforestation. On the other hand, the animals are hunted, on the one hand because of their meat, on the other hand because of the bezoar stones that sometimes form in their stomachs and which are said to have healing powers. The subspecies P. h. canicrus was thought to be lost for a long time. However, it was rediscovered in 2008 in eastern Kalimantan . Nothing is known about the degree of endangerment of the species in general - the IUCN lists them under “insufficient data” ( data deficient ).
