The Pageh snub nose , also called short-tailed snub nose ( Simias concolor ) is a species of primate from the group of slender monkeys within the family of the vervet monkeys .
description
Pageh snub noses are large, rather heavily built monkeys, whose long arms are adapted to the climbing way of life. Their fur is black-brown and their hairless face is also black. As the only species in the subfamily of the colobus and colobus monkeys, it has a short tail. This is only about 15 cm long and sparsely hairy. The short nose is directed upwards. Pageh blunt noses reach a head trunk length of around 50 cm and a weight of 7 kg. In terms of the size of their canines and weight, they have a strong sex dimorphism .
Way of life
This primate species only lives on the Mentawai Islands near Sumatra . Two of these islands, North Pagai and South Pagai (Pageh), are their main distribution area, hence the name. They are diurnal inhabitants of the tropical rainforests and rarely come to the ground. They live in small groups of three to eight animals consisting of a male, one or more females and their offspring. The group type presumably depends on the population density, with low density they form family groups with one female, with high density harem groups with several females.
The animals eat mainly leaves, but to a lesser extent they also eat fruits and berries. Almost nothing is known about reproduction.
threat
The Pageh snub noses are among the rarest and most endangered primates. Due to their small distribution area (the Mentawai archipelago only covers 7000 km²) they are particularly susceptible to disturbances. The main cause of the threat is the destruction of the habitat by clearing the rainforests.
Systematics
Your closest relative is not the genus of the snub-nosed monkey ( Rhinopithecus ), but the proboscis monkey . This relationship is derived from the structure of the nasal bones, the resemblance to the snub-nosed monkey is only superficial. Some authors even count the pageh snub nose in the same genus as the proboscis monkey and call it Nasalis concolor .
