Reimar Schefold

Reimar Schefold (* 1938 in Basel ) is professor emeritus for cultural anthropology and sociology of Indonesia at the University of Leiden . He is the son of the classical archaeologist Karl Schefold and grandson of the well-known ethnologist Karl von den Steinen .

Various field research took him to the Indonesian Mentawai Islands . He spent several years with the Sakuddei people on the island of Siberut and studied their life in the tropical rainforest . He wrote a variety of books, including a. about religious beliefs, traditional culture, songs and headhunting . Another research focus is traditional architecture.

He is chairman of the KITLV / Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies. His special thematic interests are symbolic anthropology, material culture and ethnicity. Reimar Schefold is the author and co-author of numerous books and lives with his family in Amsterdam . He also keeps the estate of his uncle Helmut von den Steinen .
