Palu is the capital of the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tengah) .

geography

The city is located on the west coast of northern Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), 1500 kilometers from the Indonesian capital Jakarta . Here the river Palu flows into the Bay of Palu belonging to the Strait of Makassar . The Palu Valley formed by the river is one of the driest regions in Indonesia with less than 600 mm of average annual rainfall . The Palu-Koro Fault , a transform fault , runs through the bay and river valley .

The city of Palu is divided into the eight districts ( Kecamatan ) North , South , West and East Palu as well as Mantikulore , Ulujadi , Tatanga and Tawaeli . These are in turn divided into 45 Kelurahans .

Residents

Palu had about 379,800 inhabitants in 2017. The population is ethnically very heterogeneous. In addition to ethnic groups from the region, such as Bugis , Gorontalo , Manado , Kaili , Toraja and Mandar , Javanese , Arabs and Chinese live here .

The region has been the scene of unrest between Christians and Muslims since 1998, in which 2,000 people have died so far. The focal point of the unrest is the eastern neighboring district of Poso .

history

As early as the 17th century, Palu was reported to be an important sea trading port. Palu was the seat of the kingdom of the same name. Under Dutch colonial rule, the empire was divided into the districts of Palu, Sigi Dolo and Kuwali. The latter two now belong to the Sigi administrative district . In 1942 the Japanese occupied the city. In 1964 Palu became the capital of the newly founded province of Central Sulawesi and in 1978 it became a city (Kota) directly subordinate to the province .

According to the Indonesian civil protection authority BNPB , tsunamis occurred in Palu as early as 1927 and 1968 . On January 24, 2005, an earthquake with a magnitude of M w  6.2 on the moment-magnitude scale occurred southeast of Palu . One person died and 177 buildings were damaged.

Bomb attack New Years Eve 2005

On the morning of December 31, 2005, at around 7:35 am local time, a nail-filled bomb exploded in the busy market in Palu, killing eight people and injuring another 54. The police suspect the radical Islamic organization Jemaah Islamiyah to be behind the attack. The market was mainly visited by Christians. It is the only place where pork is sold that is rejected by Muslim residents on religious grounds. The police later defused a second bomb. The English-language newspaper The Jakarta Post reported in its New Year's Day online edition of the arrest of a suspect by the security forces.

Tsunami 2018

On September 28, 2018 was a 7.5 earthquake whose epicenter located 80 kilometers north of Palu and its stove located 10 kilometers was below the earth's surface. A tsunami up to six meters high hit the city. The earthquake and tsunami killed 2,141 people in Palu alone. Thousands of buildings were destroyed, including the Mal Tatura Jala Emy Saelan shopping mall , the eight-story Roa-Roa Hotel , the Anutapura Hospital and several mosques. Although the National Center for Meteorology and Geophysics issued a tsunami warning a few minutes after the earthquake, the population was not warned of the danger by sirens, as was originally planned.

The city's landmark was the 250 meter long and 20 meter high bridge Palu Bridge IV ( Jembatan Palu IV ) over the mouth of the Palu River. The structure fell victim to the tsunami in 2018. It was the first arch bridge in Indonesia. Since 2004 the suspension bridge Jembatan Gantung has connected the districts of South Palu and Tatanga.

Palu has Mutiara Airport with connections to Makassar , Balikpapan on Borneo , Luwuk and on to Manado , Bali and Jakarta . The ferry terminal is on the east bank of the bay, north of the city center. In addition to smaller private colleges, the Universitas Tadulako is located in Palu , which maintains a research cooperation with two German universities.

tourism

About 40 km northwest of Palu in Banawa ( Donggala administrative district ) is the Tanjung Karang ( German for  "Coral Peninsula " ), which is known among diving tourists. You can make multi-day trips from the city to the Lore Lindu National Park , located south of Palu .
