The Mutiara Airport ( Indonesian Bandar Udara Mutiara , IATA : PLW , ICAO : WAML ) is at the end of Jl. Abd. Rahman Saleh, about five kilometers east of the city center of Palu , the capital of the Sulawesi Tengah Province (Central Sulawesi ).
history
In the severe earthquake on September 28, 2018 , the tower , the terminal building and the runway were damaged over a length of around 500 meters. One of the air traffic controllers was killed because he remained in the control tower until a machine was started. Since the airport was of central importance for rescue teams and the delivery of relief supplies, the authorities tried to get operations to resume quickly. On September 30, 2018, the airport was reopened for relief flights and some commercial flights. However, landing can only be done visually, and since visual flights are not allowed in Indonesia at night, the airport can only be approached during the day. The reconstruction of the airport should be completed by the middle of 2021.
