from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (German: National Agency for Disaster Protection), abbreviated to BNPB , is the Indonesian civil protection system . The organization is based in Jakarta and its president is Willem Rampangilei.

The state organization was founded in 2008 and replaced the Badan Koordinasi Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana (German: National Coordinating Committee for Disaster Management), which was founded in 1979 and was not subject to direct government decree. The Indonesian President is directly authorized to give instructions to the BNPB and he appoints its director.

BNPB works with national and international NGOs as well as universities and UN agencies to exchange experiences. The agency relies heavily on the help of volunteers in the event of a disaster.

The BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho († 2019) was widely respected in Indonesia.
