Sulawesi Tengah (German Central Sulawesi , formerly Central Celebes ) is an Indonesian province on the island of Sulawesi . It is located on the equator in the northern part of the island and includes the southern part of the northern peninsula and the eastern peninsula. Central Sulawesi is divided into ten administrative districts ( kabupaten , English regency ).
Overview
The mountainous surface of the province is responsible for a strong ethnic fragmentation of the population and for the low population density. Away from the coastal plains, the traffic routes are poorly developed and contribute to the isolation of entire stretches of land, especially on the eastern peninsula. The predominant religion is Islam (63%), alongside Protestants (28%), Catholics (4%) and followers of indigenous religions. The capital and only major city is Palu . Religiously tinged, civil war-like tensions prevail at times in the Poso administrative district .
Due to its isolation, the province is one of the most economically backward in Indonesia. The only major industry is the wood industry. In the mountainous region south of the capital Palu is the Lore Lindu National Park , an important refuge for the endemic flora and fauna of the Wallacea area of biological diversity . The cultivation of cocoa has expanded rapidly in recent years.
history
Islam reached the region in the 17th century, and Dutch colonial rule established itself in the 18th century. This was the beginning of the Protestant proselytizing of the population, which led to the fact that today just over a quarter of the population are Protestants, one of the highest values in all of Indonesia. During the Second World War it was occupied by the Japanese , after Indonesia's independence (1949) the region belonged to the Sulawesi Utara province . The current province was formed in 1964.
Earthquake and tsunami on September 28, 2018
On this day, the isthmus in the middle of the province and its immediate vicinity was hit by a dozen earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.0 to 7.7. A tsunami developed off the west coast of the island and landed catastrophically in the port of Palu. These events caused considerable damage to property and personal injury.
Administrative division
Central Sulawesi is divided into 12 administrative districts ( Kabupaten ) and the city ( Kota ) of Palu. The administrative districts are divided into 147 districts ( Kecamatan ) and these are further divided into 1,664 villages ( Desa / Kelurahan ).
