Poso is a city in the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tengah). The city has 55,512 inhabitants (2010 calculation).
Geography and infrastructure
Poso is the seat of government of the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Poso . The city lies on the banks of the Poso Bay . One of the most important ports on the north coast of Central Sulawesi is located here.
The river Poso has its origins in the 40 km southern Lake Poso and flows near the town into the sea. Poso has an airport that is not served by scheduled flights.
history
Since 1998, and especially 2005, religious unrest has repeatedly shaken the area around Poso. Numerous people were killed and many buildings were destroyed.
During an anti-terrorist operation against the jihadist group around Abu Wardah, a Bell 412EP helicopter of the Indonesian armed forces crashes on March 20, 2016. 13 soldiers die in the process.
