Balikpapan is a city on the Indonesian part of the island of Borneo ( Kalimantan ). With around 434,000 inhabitants, it is the largest city in the province of Kalimantan Timur (East Borneo).
Balikpapan is located on the east coast of the island, on the Makassar Strait , around 150 km south of the provincial capital Samarinda . The most important branch of industry is the oil production , the processing in several refineries , as well as its export through a large oil port. In addition, mining and the timber industry (export of tropical timber from the Borneo rainforest ) also play a role. Balikpapan also has an international airport .
Until the discovery of the first oil well in 1897 there was only a small village in the area of the present city. After that, rapid growth began. Due to the oil fields and the refineries, the city was fiercely contested in the Second World War : In January 1942 there was a sea battle off Balikpapan , in February 1942 the city was captured by the Japanese army , and in July 1945 it was recaptured by the Allies.
In March 2018, a pipeline accident occurred in which an unknown amount of crude oil flowed into the bay off Balikpapan and partially ignited.
