Remote publishing , also known as web-to-print or online printing , refers to the creation or personalization of print templates for, for example, business cards , stationery or advertising materials over the Internet .

Details

The user uses an online editor to create his own templates in the web browser . Here he can choose from a selection of designed templates. When creating a template, areas are marked for later editing via web access or elements are prefabricated which - controlled by a set of rules - dynamically merge image and data components into a new print template after user interaction.

Depending on the system, the user immediately receives a preview of his changes, usually a JPG image, and can its customized artwork as PDF-X - print file from the server Make a to and / or transmit directly to the print finishing. Some systems also allow you to upload your own images and other data, for example to enable personalized mailings.

By querying the necessary printing parameters during the creation of the print template and the associated online calculation, the interested party immediately receives his offer price. This is made possible by standardizing individual products. Common technical means for this are server-based PDF applications , but also layout programs and graphics programs such as Adobe FrameMaker , InDesign and QuarkXPress (DDS), which can be remotely controlled via http calls within a server application.

This production method is becoming more and more important, especially in the field of database publishing and variable data publishing applications .

Some application reports on the use of Adobe InDesign Server and Quark Dynamic Document Server can be found under the term Brand Management .

variants

A general distinction is made as to whether a remote publishing or web-to-print application is business-to-business (B2B) or business-to-consumer (B2C) software. The functions integrated in each case differ significantly depending on the requirements of the respective customer. While it is important in a B2B system to take into account a fixed corporate design through regulations , in the B2C system it is above all necessary to give the end customer as much freedom as possible so that he can individualize his personal print medium.

Software manufacturer

Depending on the provider, a remote publishing application specializes in the end customer environment (B2B / B2C). In some cases, both environments can be combined in one software. Many manufacturers of offset / digital printing machines often work together with software providers for web-to-print applications.
