The Sultan Aji Muhamad Sulaiman International Airport ( Indonesian Bandar Udara Internasional Sultan Aji Muhamad Sulaiman , IATA : BPN , ICAO : WALL ) is the airport of Balikpapan , capital of the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan . The new airport was opened in 1997 and replaced the old facility on the same site that was built in colonial times. In terms of the number of passengers, it is the sixth largest airport in Indonesia.
history
Sultan Aji Muhamad Sulaiman Airport was mainly used for Dutch oil production activities in the region during colonial times. The Indonesian Ministry of Transport opened the airport to civil and commercial air travel in 1960. In 1987 the airport administration was transferred to the state airport operator PT. Angkasa Pura I passed. The airport was renovated twice between 1991 and 1997. The first phase ran from 1991 to 1994 with the expansion of the runway and the renovation of the taxiway, passenger and cargo terminals. The second phase ran from 1996 to 1997 with the renovation of the maintenance hall , the fuel store and the administration building.

Incidents
- On July 4, 1988, a Vickers Viscount 843 of the Indonesian Bouraq Indonesia Airlines ( aircraft registration number (PK-IVW) ) landed with a tailwind on the wet runway at Balikpapan Airport. After touchdown, the nose and right main landing gear collapsed. The machine was damaged beyond repair. All 76 occupants survived the accident.
