The tram in Prague started operating as a horse-drawn tram on September 23, 1875 . In 1896 František Křižík opened the first electric tram between Prague, Libeň and Vysočany. On September 1, 1897, the first electric railway on the left bank of the Vltava , the Letná tram, followed with the connection to the municipality of Kosire, now part of Prague . The same day also marks the date the company was founded today. In 1898 all horse trams in the city were taken over by the transport company and electrified by 1905. In the following years the network grew from 55.2 kilometers in 1908 over 77 kilometers in 1913, 104 in 1929 to 133 in 1939.

The Second World War hardly caused any damage to the railway, so that operations could be resumed on May 8, 1945 after a brief standstill. By 1957 the network had been expanded to 172 kilometers. Due to some shutdowns, the current network is only 136 kilometers in length. The 34 lines operating on this network have a total line length of 540.6 kilometers and in 2004 transported 356.834 million passengers. Today the tram takes on around 1/3 of the total public transport volume in the city.

A historic tram line runs between April 1st and November 19th on weekends and on public holidays. It has had number 41 since spring 2017. It had to give up the previous number 91, which was taken over by a night line.

omnibus

The transport company operates 176 bus routes in the city. In 2008, they carried around 308.112 million passengers.

trolleybus

Trolleybus lines operated in Prague for the first time between 1936 and 1972, but these were discontinued in favor of the expansion of the underground and new tram lines.

A test for a new trolley bus system was started on October 15, 2017. Unlike classic trolleybus systems, only certain sections are electrified; apart from these, the buses run on batteries. Based on this test operation, the first regular trolleybus line, line 58 between Palmovka and Letňany, opened on July 1, 2018. After further expansion of the overhead lines, line 58 should Template: future / in 2 yearscompletely replace the diesel bus line 140 (Palmovka - Miškovice) around 2022 . The conversion of another five diesel bus routes is also Template: future / in 5 yearsplanned by 2025 .
