Rytis Martikonis (born February 8, 1967 in Kaunas , Lithuanian SSR ) is a Lithuanian administrative lawyer and politician , diplomat , EU official , General Director of the Directorate-General for Translation and former Deputy Foreign Minister of Lithuania .

Life

From 1987 to 1993 he studied law (specialization: constitutional law and international law ) at Vilnius University . From 1989 to 1990 he studied political science and law at Bowdoin College (USA). From 1991 to 1992 he studied political science and international relations at the University of Aarhus ( Denmark ) and in 1993 at the Clingersael Institute in The Hague ( Netherlands ).

From 1992 to 1995 he worked in the Western Europe Unit in the European Integration Department in the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from 1995 to 1999 he was a consultant at the Lithuanian Representation to the EU. From 1999 to 2001 he was head of the European Integration Department of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2001 to 2003 he was deputy head of the Lithuanian delegation in the EU accession negotiations . From 2001 to 2004 he was State Secretary in the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From 2002 to 2003 he was a member of the European Convention, from 2004 to 2005 Ambassador to the Political and Security Committee (PSK) in the Permanent Mission to the EU and from 2005 to 2010 Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the European Union . From October 2010 he was an advisor to the Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius . Since February 16, 2011, he has been Director General (responsible for business operations) of the Directorate-General for Translation ( European Commission ).

He has many state awards from Lithuania, France and Spain.

Rytis is married and has four children.

He speaks Lithuanian, English, Russian and French.
