biography

After studying mathematics and physics in Würzburg , he passed the first state examination in 1984. He passed the 2nd state examination in 1986 in Erlangen . From 1989 to 1998 he was a research assistant at the chair for didactics of mathematics at the University of Würzburg. In 1993 he received his doctorate in didactics of mathematics with the thesis "To understand the concept of curves in mathematics lessons". The habilitation followed in 1997 with the text "Concept formation as creative activity in mathematics lessons". In 1998 he took over the chair for didactics of mathematics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

Current focus of work

Scientific fields of work

The scientific work areas include creativity in math lessons, the concept of curves in math lessons, the use of computers in math lessons and the construction of algebraic curves. The acquisition of mathematical technical language and the effect on other subjects are another focus.

Research topics

Some of the current research topics are the development of creativity routines for mathematics teaching at all school levels, the application of creativity routines to generate novel constructions for algebraic curves, and the application of creativity routines to generate novel elementary geometrical phenomena and sentences.

further activities

Weth is a member of the university network for teacher training and new media. He is involved in numerous research collaborations with other universities, such as with Hans-Joachim Vollrath and Hans-Georg Weigand ( University of Würzburg ), Martin Stein ( University of Münster ), Uwe Tietze ( University of Braunschweig ) and Ulrich Kortenkamp ( University of Potsdam ). Thomas Weth was co-organizer of the working group "Mathematics Lessons and Computer Science of the GDM " and is responsible for the lecture series "Mathematics Didactic Concerts". Other projects include the development of a new type of pocket calculator in cooperation with Casio and the development of a decentralized teaching and learning environment for studying mathematics didactics. For the VHB (Virtual University of Bavaria), Weth is working on the development of an internet-based course on "computers in mathematics lessons". As an externally funded project, it is involved in a cooperation with Bertelsmann as part of the BIG (Educational Pathways in the Information Society) project .
