The European Audiovisual Observatory ( French Observatoire Europeen de l'Audiovisuel , OBS ) deals with the collection and dissemination of information about the European audiovisual media . It is a European public law body founded in December 1992 and is part of the Council of Europe . 39 member states and the European Union represented by the European Commission are involved in it.

Statute and duties

The purpose of the statute is to promote the flow of information within the audiovisual industry as well as an overview of the market and its transparency. The information center should attach particular importance to ensuring the reliability, compatibility and comparability of the information.

These objectives are to be achieved through the collection, processing and production of information and statistics on the audiovisual business sector in its 39 Member States (in particular legal, economic and program-related information). For this purpose, various databases are being developed that allow user groups easy access to information. As of August 2012, the following databases can be accessed:

  • MAVISE - database of television companies and broadcasters in the European Union
  • LUMIERE - Database of movie attendance figures in Europe
  • IRIS Merlin - database of legal information relevant to the audiovisual sector in Europe
  • KORDA database on public funding for films and audiovisual productions in Europe

Target groups

The target group of the European Audiovisual Observatory includes professionals in the audiovisual sector: producers, distributors, cinema operators, broadcasters and providers of other media services, employees of international organizations in the audiovisual field, decision-makers within the various media authorities, national and European legislators, journalists, academics, lawyers, investors and Consultant.

structure

The Executive Director of the European Audiovisual Observatory leads a multicultural team from several European countries. Organizationally, the information center is divided into two departments: the department for information on markets and financing , and the department for legal information

The bodies of the Observatory are: the Executive Council and the Advisory Committee, as well as a Finance Committee made up of representatives on the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe member states who are also members of the Observatory, as well as representatives of the other members of the Observatory.

Villa Schützenberger

The European Audiovisual Observatory is based in Strasbourg . It has been housed since 1992 in the lordly former Villa Schützenberger, built by the architects Julius Berninger and Gustave Krafft from 1897 to 1900, a listed Art Nouveau building with a garden since 1975 .
