Belen is a town in Valencia County in the US state of New Mexico in the United States with 6901 inhabitants ( as of 2000 ) .

The city is almost centrally located in the county in the north-west of New Mexico and has a total area of ​​12.2 km² without any significant water surface.

history

The name Belen is derived from the Spanish word Belén for Bethlehem. The city was founded by the Spaniards through the settlement of Genízaros (Hispanic Indians ), who were supposed to protect the border area from raids by nomadic tribes.

Demographic data

According to the 2000 census, 6901 people lived here in 2596 households and 1,778 families. The population density was 565 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 67.5% White, 1.1% African American, 1.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian and other groups.
