Lists on the subject

The Winchester Model 1893 was the first pump action with pump-action system that Winchester made. John Moses Browning prophesied to his client, Thomas Gray Bennet of Winchester, that this system would be the future for bolt-action shotguns. He argued that the Spencer and Burgess pump guns already available on the market are in high demand from dealers.

In 1890 Winchester bought a patented prototype (US Patent Number 441390) from John M. Browning and improved it by the company's own engineers. The "Winchester 1893" model emerged from this improved design and - as one can already assume from the model name - came onto the market in 1893. This was a forearm repeater for black powder cartridges with an external cock and side case ejection in caliber 12/65, the tube magazine of which held 5 cartridges.

The standard barrel lengths were 30 "(762 mm) and 32" (812 mm). A very small number was also available in the Riot version. As was customary at the time, better equipment was also possible for an extra charge. It actually became a hit for a short time, but the weaknesses of the 1893 model soon became apparent: if the new cartridges with smokeless powder were used more often , material fatigue and the defects that could be traced back to it were soon discovered.

In 1897, after only 34050 pieces were produced, production was stopped, but with the consecutive number 34051, production of the improved version, the model 1897 with a reinforced system in 12/70 caliber, began. This is where the real success story of the best-selling pump gun with an external hammer begins.
